Ice on your AC in 45°C heat: why coils freeze and what to do

Freezing happens when the evaporator coil drops below 0°C. That occurs when there is too little heat moving across the coil — either because airflow is restricted or because the refrigerant charge is wrong.

Do this first

1. Switch the cooling off. Leave the fan running to melt the ice — an hour or more for a heavy build-up.
2. Put towels down; a lot of water comes off a frozen coil.
3. Check and clean the filter while it thaws.
4. Restart on cooling. If it re-freezes within a day, stop using it and book a technician.

Never chip ice off a coil. The fins and the copper are thin and easily punctured.

The causes, in order of likelihood

Dirty filter or blocked return. Restricted air across the coil is the classic cause, and in Dubai dust it happens fast. Furniture or curtains blocking a return grille does the same thing.

Dirty evaporator coil. Even with a clean filter, a coil caked in fine dust and biofilm chokes airflow.

Low refrigerant. Low charge drops the coil pressure and temperature. This one comes with weak cooling that got worse gradually, and needs a leak test — not just a top-up.

Failing blower fan. If the fan is slowing or the blower wheel is loaded with dust, airflow drops even though everything looks clean.

Closed or blocked ducts. Too many closed vents in a ducted system reduces total airflow below what the coil needs.

Thermostat set too low overnight. Running at 16–18°C for hours in high humidity can freeze a marginal system. Set 22–24°C; you will cool the same and pay less.

Why you cannot ignore it

Ice means liquid refrigerant can reach the compressor. Compressors pump gas, not liquid. That is how a filter you did not clean becomes a four-figure repair.

When it is not the AC

In humid coastal areas of Dubai, an oversized system that short-cycles never runs long enough to dehumidify, and the pattern of icing plus damp rooms points to sizing rather than a fault. That is a design conversation, not a repair.

Prevention

Clean filters monthly, get a coil clean each year before summer, keep return grilles clear, and treat any gradual loss of cooling as a leak to be investigated rather than a top-up to be repeated.
