AC not turning on in Dubai: the checks to make before you call anyone

Nine times out of ten a dead AC in a Dubai apartment is a tripped breaker, a drain safety switch or a thermostat problem. Here is the order to check them in.

An AC that shows no life at all is usually an electrical or safety-cut problem, not a broken compressor. Work through this list before you pay for a call-out.

1. The breaker panel

Find the DB board (usually near the entrance or in the laundry) and look for a tripped breaker marked AC, HVAC or FCU. Reset it once. If it trips again immediately, stop — that is a genuine fault and resetting repeatedly is a fire risk.

2. The isolator switch

Most Dubai apartments have a separate isolator near the indoor unit or in the ceiling void access panel. Cleaners and handymen switch it off and forget. Check it is on.

3. The drain safety switch

Ducted and concealed units have a float switch that cuts power when the condensate tray fills. A blocked drain line therefore looks exactly like a dead AC. If the tray is wet, you need a drain flush, not a new unit.

4. The thermostat

  • Replace the batteries in a wall thermostat if it has them.
  • Confirm the mode is Cool, not Fan or Off, and the setpoint is well below room temperature.
  • On a smart thermostat, check the schedule has not put it into an away or eco block.

5. The remote and the unit

For a wall split, point the remote at the unit and watch for the display to respond. No response with fresh batteries points at the indoor PCB.

When to call a technician

Call if the breaker trips again, if you can smell burning, if you can hear a hum without the fan moving, or if you have done all of the above and still have nothing. Tell whoever comes exactly which checks you already made — it shortens the diagnosis and should reduce the bill.
