AC running but not cooling: 7 causes and what to check first

An AC that runs but does not cool is the single most common complaint in Dubai between May and September. Most cases come down to airflow, refrigerant or a failed electrical component — and two of those you can check yourself.

1. A blocked filter (check this first)

A clogged filter starves the coil of air. The unit runs, the compressor works, and almost no cold air reaches the room. In Dubai dust, filters need cleaning every 2–4 weeks in summer. Slide the filter out, rinse it, dry it fully, put it back. If cooling improves within an hour, that was it.

2. A frozen or dirty evaporator coil

If you see ice on the indoor coil or the copper pipe, turn the AC off and run the fan only for an hour to defrost. Ice usually means restricted airflow or low refrigerant — both need attention, because running a frozen system damages the compressor.

3. Low refrigerant from a leak

Weak cooling that got gradually worse over weeks usually means gas has escaped. A refill alone is a temporary fix; the leak has to be found. Ask any technician to pressure-test before recharging.

4. A failed capacitor

If the indoor fan blows but the outdoor unit hums and does not start, a capacitor is a strong suspect. It is a cheap part and a fast fix — but it needs a technician, since capacitors hold a charge even when powered off.

5. Thermostat or control fault

Check the obvious: mode set to Cool, not Fan; set temperature well below room temperature; fresh batteries in the remote; the wall thermostat actually calling for cooling. In some Dubai apartments the thermostat controls a chilled-water valve, and a stuck valve looks exactly like a dead AC.

6. A dirty condenser outside

The outdoor unit rejects heat. If it is caked in dust, boxed in by a balcony store, or blowing into a wall a few centimetres away, it cannot dump heat and the room never cools. Clear at least 30–50 cm around it.

7. The system is simply undersized for the load

If cooling is fine at night and hopeless at 3pm, or fine in one room and never in another, the problem may be capacity, insulation, or a sun-facing glass wall — not a fault at all. A technician can confirm with a temperature-split reading across the coil.

When to stop and call someone

Call a professional if you see ice, smell burning, hear grinding, the breaker trips, or cooling has not returned after cleaning the filter and clearing the condenser. Anything involving refrigerant or opening the electrical box is licensed work in the UAE.
