A thermostat is a target, not a throttle. Setting 18C does not cool the room faster than 24C — it just makes the system run far longer than it needs to.
The range that works in Dubai
- Daytime, occupied: 24 to 25C. Comfortable in most Dubai apartments, and each degree higher cuts cooling energy meaningfully.
- Sleeping: 23 to 24C with a fan for air movement.
- Empty home: 27 to 28C, never fully off. Switching off entirely in July lets humidity build, and humid, hot air is what grows mould in ducts and wardrobes.
Why very low setpoints cause faults
Continuous running at an unreachable setpoint means the coil never gets a defrost cycle, which leads to icing, then to poor airflow, then to a frozen coil and a service call. It also runs the compressor at high duty for months.
Things that matter more than the number
- Clean filters. A blocked filter defeats any setpoint.
- Air movement. A ceiling fan makes 25C feel like 23C at a fraction of the energy.
- Solar gain. Blackout curtains on west-facing glass are worth a full degree in most Dubai towers.
- Door discipline. Cooling an unoccupied bedroom with the door open wastes a third of your output.
Humidity
In August, comfort in Dubai is as much about humidity as temperature. If the room feels clammy at 24C, the coil or drain likely needs cleaning — a healthy system dehumidifies as it cools.
